Understanding the Second Empathic System

Pat Love on a Key Difference Between Men and Women

It’s no secret to anyone that men and women register and react to emotions differently. But it’s important for therapists who work with couples to more fully understand where this difference comes from and how to effectively work with it.

In a clip from one of our webcast series, Symposium 2014 presenter Pat Love talks about the different ways men and women experience empathy. While the common belief for decades has been that there’s just one kind of empathy, Pat says there is another empathic system that is more commonly utilized by men, and it can cause friction in relationships when the two empathic systems aren’t understood.

Watch the clip below to hear Pat talk about empathic systems and how they differ.

Pat Love, EdD, a relationship consultant and marriage and family therapist, is the coauthor of Hot Monogamy and How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It.

Join us at Networker Symposium 2014 to hear Pat speak at the couples therapy forum, “Advances and Challenges in Couples Therapy Today,” and/or attend her workshop, “Joining With Your Millennial Couples.”
